Prof. Frauke Melchior Posttranslational protein modifications

Posttranslational modification with ubiquitin related proteins of the SUMO family is an essential and widely used mechanism to regulate cellular functions. Using biochemical and cell biological approaches, we aim to understand basic mechanisms, regulation, and function of SUMOylation in mammalian cells. In addition to characterizing components of the basic machinery (e.g., conjugating enzymes and isopeptidases), we study connections between SUMOylation and nucleocytoplasmic transport, links between SUMO- and ubiquitin-conjugation pathways, and regulation of sumoylation in the context of redox signaling.
